5 Things You Need to Know about Black Panther
I’ve pulled together 5 key points for someone new to Marvel and all things Black Panther & Wakanda.
I had a blast researching this new-to-me superhero and can’t wait to see Chadwick Boseman play the Black Panther on screen.
Here are just a few things you need to know about the Black Panther Marvel movie before you see it in theaters. And you DO have your tickets, right?!
1. The Black Panther’s bodyguards, the Dora Milaje,?are women
Want some bad ass females on screen? Here you go.
Based on the trailers out so far, we’re going to get some serious black girl power and I’m living for it. If you don’t believe me, check out this new featurette as proof.
These women are going to rock the big screen!
Meet the Dora Milaje and learn just why these women are fierce protectors of their king.
I dare you not to start yelling “Wakanda FOREVER!” after watching this clip. Because I’ve been saying it all day and my kids are like- ma, stop.
I know, kids, your mom is weird.
Speaking of Wakanda…
2. Marvel’s Black Panther is from the country of Wakanda
What do you know about Wakanda?
Wakanda is a relatively unknown African nation with a rich history. Few people have heard of it, and even fewer outside of the country have visited it.
With T’Challa’s rise to power, he’s forced to share his once private country of Wakanda with the outside world.
As you can imagine, with change, there can be some friction and drama.
Located somewhere near Ethiopia, the people of Wakanda are fierce fighters who do not take kindly to outsiders. The Black Panther comics make it clear that intruders will not be allowed near Wakanda.
Vibranium- the metal used to make Captain America’s?shield- is the source of Wakanda’s financial and technological success.
The trailers are hinting at some killer new tech coming to us from this small African nation- bring on the cool stuff! That’s part of the joy I get from watching the MCU movies.
3. The Black Panther is richer than Tony Stark
Thanks to Vibranium, T’Challa has more money than Stark. And he’s pretty freaking brilliant too!
And you know that has to irk Stark, even if T’Challa was on Team Iron Man in Captain America: Civil War.
Which I’m ok with since I’m no Stark fan, to be honest. Team Cap over here forever and always (though Iron Man does have his moments, I will admit!).
By the way, if you haven’t seen that movie, be sure to check it out. It’s going to be the quickest way to answer things to know about the Black Panther before you watch the new movie.
4. Wakanda and The Black Panther has enemies
As you can guess: when you are the richest nation in the world, people are going to come after you.
This is what we’re seeing set up in the trailers and what I expect to see play out on screen. Villains Killmonger &?Ulysses Klaw are the threats from outside, but there’s also a threat from within its own country:?M?Baku, a Wakandan who opposes T’Challa’s rule.
Who is Erik Kilmonger? He’s one bad dude with a serious grudge against T’Challa. He’s an MIT grad with some serious hand to hand fighting skills, making him an almost even match with the Black Panther.
Possible spoiler alert & comic book nerdiness: Erik Killmonger is a long-time enemy of T’Challa and his family, who, according to the comic books, will just not die.
No matter how many times T’Challa seems to kill him off.
So watch this one; he’s a slippery dude!
You can read more about Erik Killmonger over on Screenrant.
5. The Black Panther is not just a suit
Again- Sorry, Tony Stark. The Black Panther out-awesomes you here, too.
His powers come from the Heart-Shaped Herb that’s enriched by, you guessed it, Vibranium. Each Black Panther consumes this plant to enhance their powers.
Alright- who’s ready to see this Marvel movie?
ME! This girl, right here.
I’ve got my tickets, I’ve done my background research, I’m listening to Black Panther playlist every day on Spotify… yeah, let’s do this, WAKANDA FOREVER!
