About Are You There God, It’s Me, Margaret
A beloved and best-selling classic comes to the big screen with Lionsgate’s adaptation of Judy Blume’s Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. Starring Rachel McAdams, Kathy Bates, and Abby Ryder Fortson as Margaret, this timeless, coming-of-age story has transcended decades and spoken to generations.
At 11, Margaret is moving to a new town and beginning to contemplate everything about life, friendship, and adolescence.
She relies on her mother (McAdams), who offers loving support but is herself finding her own footing in a new place, and her grandmother Sylvia (Bates), who is coming to terms with finding happiness in the next phase of her life.
For all three, questions of identity, one’s place in the world, and what brings meaning to a life will draw them closer together than ever before.

Is Are You There God, It’s Me, Margaret Ok For Kids: Mature Topics
This is the area where parents need to reach back to their memories of the book.
There’s a lot going on in Are You There, God, It’s Me Margaret past the puberty discussions. Though of course, that’s why we all took the book from the library in 4th grade. Guilty.
Margaret’s parents are a mixed religion couple, one that decided early on that they wouldn’t choose for their young daughter.
Margaret enters a religious discovery period where she’s searching for the faith that she might ultimately want to belong to.
Along this path are conflicting pressures from other family members and questions that may not align with your family’s faith. It’s all handled beautifully, but just be warned its heavy on religious discussion.
Family strife and abandonment situations are discussed.
As far as sex education, Margaret and her 6th-grade girlfriends are all in the “we kinda know whats up but not reallllllly” stage of life.
They talk about things like sanitary napkins, periods, bras and boys, trying to discover what each other knows or has experienced.
This is a great movie to watch with your own daughter if you’re looking for a way to start broaching those subjects but just aren’t sure how to do it.
Kids also:
- Look at a Playboy magazine
- Look at an anatomy book to see what a penis looks like (drawing of one)
- Play games like spin the bottle and 2 minutes in the closet
- Practice kissing on a bed post
