Do You Need To See Avatar (2009) To Understand the Sequel?

There are a lot of callbacks and characters from the first movie making an appearance in the 2nd.

We’d suggest watching Avatar on Disney+ first before seeing this one for the most clarity.

Can you get by without it? Yes. But it definitely helps if you see the other one first.

Language

There is one F-bomb in Avatar: The Way of Water. It’s said by a teen, so that might make things a little worse from a kid perspective.

Your kids will also hear:

  • sh!t
  • h@ll
  • p@nis face (taunt)
  • b!tch
  • d@mn, d@mnit
  • wuss
  • J@sus
  • crap
  • @ss
  • sucks
  • (on-screen in writing) b@ttholes
  • dipsh!t
  • moron
  • @sshole

Age Rating of Avatar: The Way of Water: Is It Safe For Teens When It Comes To Sex, Romance, and Nudity?

There is no sex or overt nudity in Avatar: The Way of Water.

Just as in the first movie, the Navi wear little clothing. During one early scene you can see a Navi floating in a tank and her breast (including nipple) is shown. But it’s very brief and not the focus of the moment.

While this isn’t sexual, you will see characters with g-string-type loin clothes barely covering their bodies.

The females have breasts but they are covered in a variety of ways.

There are some mild flirtations and hugging from married couples.

Violence and Gore: Is Avatar: The Way of Water Too Scary For Kids Under 13?

There are some intense action sequences in the movie.

While it isn’t particularly gory, it definitely is intense.

There are jump scares, animal attacks, war scenes, major explosions, fire destruction, near-deaths, and deaths. Corpses are shown (animal and human).

One scene, in particular, is incredibly intense when a sharklike creature chases one of the children through a reef.

If you see this in 3D, be prepared for a kid in your lap!

Characters are impaled, shot in the face with arrows and axes, and one has an arm ripped off by a large cable. You see the amputated limb flying in the air from afar, so it’s not too gory- but enough to get the idea.

Is Avatar 2 Ok For Kids: Mature Topics

There are some possibly triggering moments including the death of a child.

Themes of family and co-existing with nature are the biggest plot points in the movie.

We didn’t see any characters smoking or drinking in this one.

Age Rating of Avatar The Way of Water: What Ages Can Really Watch This One?

Avatar: The Way of Water is rated PG-13 for partial nudity, intense action, sequences of strong violence, and some strong language

Parents Guide: Is Avatar: The Way of Water Appropriate For Kids Under 13?

If your kids have seen Avatar (2009) and enjoyed it, they are probably safe to watch Avatar 2 as it’s generally more of the same.

It’s actually very much more of the same as the plot doesn’t change too much from the first film.

The biggest concern parents may have about seeing this one in the theater is the length. Avatar: The Way of Water is over 3 hours long, and that’s a really long time for younger kids to sit through.

Even if you know when to pee during Avatar: The Way of Water, this movie not only runs long but feels long as well.

We think kids ages 10 and up could likely watch Avatar as long as language and the overall violence is not a concern for a sensitive child.

I saw this movie last December so I don't know what the time stamp would be- sorry about that! But it does happen early on.
