Violence and Gore: Is Haunted Mansion (2023) Too Scary For Kids Under 13?
There are some good jump scares in the Haunted Mansion movie.
While nothing is too gory or graphic, there are heavy uses of dead, ghostly imagery that indicate violent deaths occurred. Your kids will see tons of skeletons and images of deaths.
Murder is on the agenda and the characters in the movie are all in danger. From alligators to charging axe-wielding ghost brides to potential explosions to spirits taking over bodies: there’s a lot going on in the Haunted Mansion.
There isn’t any blood in the movie, but there are moments where people and a child are in peril and being chased by angry weapon-carrying ghosts.
The movie isn’t as tame as Muppet’s Haunted Mansion, but lands on our list of Scary (but not too) Scary movies for teens and tweens.
There are some thrills in this one that will appeal to budding horror lovers.
Is Haunted Mansion Movie Ok For Kids: Mature Topics
Haunted Mansion (2023) does have a fair amount of heavy moments surrounding grief and loss.
If you take a beat to consider the source material (999 ghosts have to mean a lot of loss and death, right?), it makes sense.
But you generally don’t see a Disney movie focusing so sharply on loss as a prevailing theme.
If your child has experienced the loss of a parent or if there’s been a loss of a spouse in your life, this movie could have some triggering moments.
There is also a discussion about a child being willing to die (to save others and to join a deceased loved one) which may be a bit much for younger children.
Characters are shown drinking alcohol, with one drinking to cope with grief.
There is a long seance scene in the movie that coincides with the seance scene on the attraction at the Disney Parks.

But please consider pre-screening this one if they have any tendencies towards nightmares after scary movies or books.
