About Dumb Money (2023)
Dumb Money is the ultimate David vs. Goliath tale, based on the insane true story of everyday people who flipped the script on Wall Street and got rich by turning GameStop (yes, the mall videogame store) into the world’s hottest company.
In the middle of everything is regular guy Keith Gill (Paul Dano), who starts it all by sinking his life savings into the stock and posting about it.
When his social posts start blowing up, so does his life and the lives of everyone following him. As a stock tip becomes a movement, everyone gets rich – until the billionaires fight back, and both sides find their worlds turned upside down.
Dumb Money Age Rating: What Ages Can Really Watch This One?
Dumb Money is rated R for drug use, sexual material, and language. But what exactly does that mean for your kids? We’ll break it down for you in this Dumb Money parents guide.
Age Rating of Dumb Money: Parents Guide (7 Big Things)
Can your kids watch this one? What is the age rating of Dumb Money?
This parent’s guide will help you decide if your family can handle the seven big issues with movies and shows: mature topics, gore, violence, language, sex, romance, and nudity. We’ll also give the Dumb Money age rating and age-appropriate recommendations.
Language
This will be the biggest issue for most parents if language is a no-go issue.
The language is harsh and found throughout the entire movie.
Your kids will hear:
- F-bombs in many forms
- in songs, N-word
- d!ck
- b!tch
- sh!t
- @sshole
- sh!tballs
- @ss
- h@ll
- R- word
- p@ssy
- G-d D@mn
- flipping the bird, including once by a little kid
- WAP song
Age Rating of Dumb Money: Is It Safe For Teens When It Comes To Sex, Romance, and Nudity?
Some sexual lines of dialogue are said, mentioning things like anal lube, dildo, jerking off, and orgasm.
So it’s not clean on that level.
There is also a same-sex romance and relationship that includes kissing and a scene where the girls meet when one is dared to put her hand down the other girl’s pants for 2 minutes.
There are no full-on sex scenes in Dumb Money, but there is some brief nudity.
There is also one scene with nudity when two men run across a football field naked. You see both their naked backsides in full.
Violence and Gore: Is Dumb Money Too Scary For Kids Under 17?
There’s no actual violence or gore in Dumb Money.
This is not a scary movie on that level, though it is rather shocking to see what happens in Wall Street. Oof.
Is Dumb Money Ok For Kids: Mature Topics
The movie covers technical investing and stock market terms that may be hard for younger kids to track. But it’s pretty dumbed down so even a non-investor can get the gist of what is happening.
The movie is set during the height of the pandemic and shows how people dealt with the stress of the times.
Noticeable was when the companies and billionaires showed one way of riding out the pandemic (moved whole companies down to another state to keep working, buying a house to tear down to build a tennis court so their kids had something to do, etc) vs the working-class people shown showing up for 9-5 jobs, working in health care, riding public transportation, etc.
There is a death of an adult sibling mentioned, presumably from Covid. The family is still working through that loss and grief.
There are scenes of drinking alcohol and doing drugs in the movie (pot and cocaine are shown).
Parents Guide: Is Dumb Money Appropriate For Kids Under 17?
As always, you know your kids best.
Safe to say that any Gen Z kid interested in social media (Reddit) has probably heard of this story and is interested in the movie.
And we think its appropriate for kids in high school and up, as long as language isn’t a huge issue for your family.
Kids as young as 13 could also probably understand and enjoy the story, but please note the issues above with sexual content and language.
