About The Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds and Snakes

Years before he would become the tyrannical President of Panem, 18-years-old Coriolanus Snow is the last hope for his fading lineage, a once-proud family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol.

With the 10th annual Hunger Games fast approaching, the young Snow is alarmed when he is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird, the girls tribute from impoverished District 12.

But, after Lucy Gray commands all of Panem’s attention by defiantly singing during the reaping ceremony, Snow thinks he might be able to turn the odds in their favor.

Uniting their instincts for showmanship and newfound political savvy, Snow and Lucy’s race against time to survive will ultimately reveal who is a songbird, and who is a snake.

Age Rating of The Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds and Snakes: Is It Safe For Teens When It Comes To Sex, Romance, and Nudity?

There isn’t any true nudity in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, but there are some sensual moments and scenes.

Characters are seen in their underwear (men and women) and there are some romanctic moments that include kissing and hand holding.

A man is shown in the shower from the waist up.

Violence and Gore: Is The Ballad Of Songbirds and Snakes Too Scary For Kids Under 13?

If you have seen or read the previous Hunger Games movies or novels, then you know this one is going to be violent and gory.

And it absolutley is- standing up to similar deaths, gore and mutilations we saw in the other Hunger Games movies.

If your kids have seen those, then they will be prepared for this movie. But if this is the first Hunger Games movie your family is watching, I’d suggest pre-screening it before letting kids sit through it.

It’s a dystopian and bleak portrayal of the worst of the human spirit. Physically and mentally, its a tough movie to watch.

Teens and other people are starved, killed and tortured for sport. A man cuts off a leg to eat- yes, to eat.

There are deaths caused by (among other things) bombs and explosions.

Jump scares are also put to good use in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes- especially when it comes to snakes. If snakes are a phobia, you may want to sit this one out.

Is The Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds and Snakes Ok For Kids: Mature Topics

There are scenes portraying drug abuse and addicition as well as alcohol consumption to the point of drunkeness.

Characters are shown lying, cheating bribing, betraying and basically being terrible to each other. Not to mention the deaths they are causing.

Grief and loss are primary themes and mature topics in the film. Suicide is mentioned as well.

Parents Guide: Is The Ballad Of Songbirds and Snakes Appropriate For Kids Under 13?

As always, you know your kids best.

This is one of those where if you have any doubts, you should pre-screen without the kids.

It’s a long movie (over 2 1/2 hours long!) so younger teens and tweens may have a hard time sitting through this type of content for that length of time.

I’d say ages 14 and up should be ok if they have an interest in the books or previous movies. If this is the first Hunger Games film your family is watching, please take care to understand that it’s bleak and depressing.
