Age Rating of The Last of Us: Is It Safe For Teens When It Comes To Sex, Romance, and Nudity?

There is a nude, dead body of a woman shown.
A couple sleeps together in a bed, but they are fully clothed not indicating anything sexual happened.
Violence and Gore: Is Too Scary For Kids Under 17?
In a word: yes.
This is a bloody, gory, and violent end-of-the-world saga that is likely too scary for most kids under 17.
But your family’s mileage may vary on this topic.
If your teens are used to violent, bloody, horror-type shows, then the gore and violence shown in The Last of Us won’t be any shocker for them.
Think ‘The Walking Dead’ level of violence for example. Big fans of The Walking Dead will enjoy The Last of Us, regardless of age.
There are a plethora of weapons, gruesome deaths, fires, zombies, and graphic images of infected and dead bodies (hanging, bloody, fungi ridden, etc) throughout the episode.
Zombies attack and eat people (cannibalism), causing humans to attack and kill zombies in self-defense.
Children are killed as well in the show, which could be upsetting to younger teens.
Is The Last of Us Ok For Kids: Mature Topics
Characters are shown smoking, drinking, and taking drugs.
Drugs are also traded and dealing is referenced.
The Last of Us deals with a post-apocalyptic world, which is overall bleak, depressing, and sad.
From the tone and topic alone, we don’t think this one is suitable for many children to watch.
Age Rating: What Ages Can Really Watch This One?
The Last of Us is rated TV-MA for violence, language, and bloody scenes.
Parents Guide: Is The Last of Us (HBO) Appropriate For Kids Under 17?
As always, you know your child best.
If your kids are fans of The Last of Us video game, then they are likely going to be fine watching this.
But if they are squeamish or tend to take on the weight of the world with depression futuristic movies and shows, we’d advise skipping this one for kids under the age of 15.
Mature 16 and up audiences should be able to handle the content if your family isn’t opposed to profanity and bloody, violent scenes.
