About Wicked (movie part 1 2024)
Wicked, the untold story of the witches of Oz, stars Emmy, Grammy and Tony winning and Oscar®-nominated powerhouse Cynthia Erivo (Harriet, Broadway’s The Color Purple) as Elphaba, a young woman misunderstood because of her green skin who has yet to discover her true power, and Grammy-winning, multi-platinum recording artist and global superstar Ariana Grande as Glinda, a popular young woman gilded by privilege who has yet to discover her true heart.
The two meet as students at Shiz University in the fantastical Land of Oz and forge an unlikely but profound friendship. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfill their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.

Age Rating: What Ages Can Really Watch This One?
The movie version of Wicked is rated PG for scary action and brief suggestive material. Parental guidance is suggested.
But what does that mean for your family? We’re breaking it down with this Wicked movie parents guide.
Age Rating of Wicked Movie: Parents Guide (7 Big Things)
Can your kids watch this one? What is the age rating of Wicked?
This parent’s guide will help you decide if your family can handle the seven big issues with movies and shows: mature topics, gore, violence, language, sex, romance, and nudity. We’ll also give the Wicked age rating and age-appropriate recommendations.
Please note that this parents guide is for Wicked the movie part 1, and does not include all references found in the book or the Broadway play.
Language
There are no language concerns in Wicked.
No swears or profane language in the entire movie. Wicked is kid-friendly on this front.
Age Rating of Wicked: Is It Safe For Teens When It Comes To Sex, Romance, and Nudity?
There are some sweet romantic scenes, but there is no nudity or sex in Wicked the movie.
A romantic triangle develops but is subtle in this chapter, and young kids may not even fully pick up on it.
Violence and Gore: Is Too Scary For Kids Under 10?
There are some tense moments in Wicked, including jump scares, and I’d probably refer back to the original Judy Garland Wizard of Oz movie to gauge if your kids can handle it.
If your kids are freaked out by the flying monkeys in the original movie, they will have concerns when they see the Wicked versions.
You’ll also see some dark imagery and school bullying throughout the movie. Lessons are learned, of course, but kids are unkind to those who look and act differently than themselves.
Is Wicked Ok For Kids: Mature Topics
Animal cruelty is a central topic in the movie. Some scenes depict the harming of animals, and they are shown in pain on screen.
Animals in Oz were once equal to people, but a shift is happening in the ruling class, and animals are quickly losing their prominence and powers.
There is also a scene early on that depicts adultery between adults, resulting in the birth of a child who is raised unloved by her parents.
Adults are seen drinking something that could be alcohol.
Parental deaths occur, and a sibling blames themselves for a younger child’s disability.
I’ll also add this here: this movie is about learning magical powers. The characters are witches and sorcerers. If that’s not aligned with your family values, you’ll want to skip this film.
Parents Guide: Is Appropriate For Kids Under 10?
As always, you know your kids best.
If you have a kiddo obsessed with all the musicals they can get their ears on, you’ll have difficulty saying no to this one.
The biggest issue I’d caution parents about is the run time and the fact that this is only Part 1.
For those that don’t know, Wicked on Broadway is about 2 hours and 45 minutes long and tells the complete story; Wicked the movie (Part 1) is also about 2 hours and 45 minutes long.
And we have a whole year to wait for Part 2. If your kids will struggle with a cliffhanger ending AND a full year of waiting, you may want to wait on seeing this film.
While the movie is pretty evenly paced, even adults were getting squirmy on the train trip to Oz.
I’d caution taking any kids who don’t like musicals or who can’t sit still for this length of time. Otherwise, it’s an incredible film and suitable for most families.
If you are a fan of awards season, you’ll need to add Wicked to your list of movies to watch. And I do think this beautiful film deserves a Dolby experience if your town has one. It’s stunning in every way.
Erivo is bound to get another Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Elphaba and I wouldn’t be surprised if Grande doesn’t get one in a supporting actress role as well. Both are absolutely delightful, as is the whole cast.
