Is Death On The Nile OK For Kids? Parents Guide and Review
If you have a murder mystery Agatha Christie-loving kid at home, you are probably getting asked about this one!
While Death On the Nile isn’t a sequel to Murder on the Orient Express, it does follow the famous detective Hercule Poirot on another trek.
One that, natch, involves murder and death.
In this Death On the Nile parents guide and review, we’re breaking down the language, sex/nudity, and violence that happens in the movie to help you determine if Death On the Nile is safe for kids in your home.
Language in Death On The Nile- Parents Guide
Death On The Nile has very little in the way of swear words or concerning language.
We counted a couple of uses of h@ll, @ss, and d@mn but they were used sparingly!
Consider Death On the Nile fairly safe for kids in the language department.
Is It Safe For Kids? Sex/Nudity In Death On The Nile
The good news: there wasn’t any nudity in Death On The Nile.
The bad news?
There was a lot of talk about sex. It was a recurring discussion for some of the characters.
And there was one extremely steamy scene (right at the opening) where couples are performing Dirty Dancing-style moves. All the clothes stay on, but whoa, just barely!
Groping, gyrating, lifting women’s legs over men’s shoulders, and essentially dry-humping all over the dance floor.
If sex is a no-go in your household, you may want to reconsider letting younger children watch this one.
Violence and Gore: Is Death On The Nile Ok For Kids?
The movie is about murder, so you can expect deaths to happen.
Most of the murdering happens off-screen or captured via a reaction shot so you don’t see it go down.
There’s more gore involved (moderate blood, gunshots, dead bodies, throat slashings for example) than physical altercations.
There’s one scene that involves a dead body as a jump scare.
Suicide is mentioned (though it does not happen nor is it attempted) in the movie.
There is also an opening scene with a flashback to a World War II battle.
And it’s pretty grim and awful, just as most depictions of this war were.
There’s a scene where soldiers are blown up and a terrible injury occurs, and we do get an up-close visual of that injury.
What Ages Is Death On The Nile Appropriate For?
Death On The Nile is rated PG-13.
And that’s a pretty good guide for most kids if you are trying to decide if this is ok for kids.
Some younger children may be fine with this content, especially if they are in love with the genre!
But see the notes about sex and gore to make that decision for your kids. If they saw Murder on the Orient Express, this one seems a little more mature and sexual than the previous Hercule Poirot movie.
We’d suggest kids ages 11 and up (as long as they meet the above stipulations).
But as always, you know your kids best!
One note: this movie is fairly slow to start and long. If your kiddo has a problem paying attention, the first 45 minutes or so might be tough on them. It does pick up after that, but just know that might be the best time to go, run and pee during Death On The Nile.
It’s a gorgeous film and pays off in the end, if you can hang in there and get to it!
