Is Hamilton Safe For Kids?
This is one of those shows where your mileage may vary when it comes to how closely your child can follow the plot and the very quickly sung lyrics of certain songs.
In general, this is a show suitable for kids ages 13 and up, with a possible ok for kids in the 10-12 year range with parent supervision. I can’t say Hamilton is kid-friendly, but it’s appropriate for many ages of children.
Vague? I know, but I’ll try to clarify with a few more details about how kid-friendly Hamilton on Disney Plus actually is.
I’d say if you have a kid who is interested in any way in Alexander Hamilton, they are probably mature enough to watch this movie when it comes to Disney+.
Mature Themes and Subject Matters In Hamilton
Hamilton delves into mature subjects such as war, death, adultery, and child loss and uses some very adult language in the process.
That makes answering the question is Hamilton safe for kids a little tricky.
Death and war are major topics, and the most gut-wrenching moment for me comes with the loss of Alexander Hamilton’s oldest child. It is incredibly sad and moving and your kids should be prepared for that level of emotion.
Language is also a big concern for some parents and there’s a fair amount of it in Hamilton.
If your kid has listened to the soundtrack with you, they’ve already been exposed to any concerning language in Hamilton.
But if you are worried about language, I’d suggest listening to the Hamilton soundtrack or pre-viewing the movie before allowing your younger children to watch.
I also share a handy list of swear words in Hamilton to help you get an idea of what is in the show.
Disney+ Offers a Slightly Censored Film of the Broadway Musical
Lin-Manuel Miranda said he “gave 2 f@cks for the kids”- a nod to allowing Disney to censor some of the language in his musical in order to earn a PG-13 rating.
So yes, there is ONE F-bomb in the Disney+ Hamilton film, but not as many as you would have heard in the theater (3 are in the show).
List of Swear Words in Hamilton the Film
Lin-Manuel Miranda shared on Twitter that the following swear words were taken out of Hamilton to make it more suitable for kids.
- In Yorktown, there’s a mute over “I get the f___ back up again”
- “Southern *record scratch*kin’ Democratic-Republicans.”
Outside of those two F-bombs, you can expect to hear variations of the following cuss words in Hamilton on Disney+:
- B@stard
- son of a whore
- d@mn fool
- sh!tting on us
- oh my g-d
- sh!t spray
- our @ss
- oh sh!t
- g-d d@mn
- sh!ts the bed
- we in the sh!t now
- I get the f@ck back up again
- who the F is this?
- kicking @ss
- too many d@mn pages
- whatever the h&ll it is you do in Monticello
- d@mn you’re in worse shape
- two sh!ts
- pain the @ss
- b@stard orphan
- h&ll yes
- fuuuuuu…. (not completed)
- whore wife
- g-d d@mmit get up
- you fat mother f— (bleeped out)
- d@mn
- shat the bed
- I’ll be d@mmned
That list is a good place to start deciding if Hamilton is safe for kids.
But there’s a bit more you need to know, so please read on…
Is Hamilton Kid Friendly? There Is (Gasp!) Sexual Content in Hamilton
Alexander Hamilton was no saint and his faults are exposed on stage in Hamilton.
His long-term affair plays out on stage and was confirmed by Lin-Manuel Miranda to be fully shown in the film as well.
For those unfamiliar, the song “Say No To This” is where you might want to distract the kids or fast forward if you are not comfortable with watching Hamilton’s seduction and adultery play out.
It’s an intense scene and leaves no doubt what the two actors are moving toward, even though we don’t have any nudity in the show.
When determining if the film of Hamilton ok for kids, this is probably the biggest scene to take into consideration.
There are other bawdy references such as “intercourse is hard over four sets of corsets”- and depending on your child’s maturity level they may have more questions about corsets than intercourse!
Hamilton the film streams on Disney+ on July 3, 2020.
