Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Surprise Songs And Mashups: Heartbreak Feels Good In A Place Like This

Sharing is caring!

So we’re stealing a little from Nicole Kidman, but you gotta agree: Taylor Swift’s surprise songs and mashups can be lyrically devastating. And for some of her fans, it may not actually feel good at all if some of the theories come true. More on that in a minute. It’s become my favorite part of the Eras Tour, and I know I’m not alone. I’m shining the light on some of the choices she’s making during the Eras Tour surprise songs and mashups; if you follow the threads, they are absolutely heartbreaking.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour: What’s a Surprise Song?

Taylor started the Eras Tour in March 2023 and added two surprise songs to each show: one on guitar and one on the piano.

The idea was that each concert would be a little different and special for the audience.

She initially decided that a song would not be repeated once a song was played. Remember the girls who went viral for breaking down and sobbing in the parking lot because they “lost” their favorite song the night before their concert? Yep, that happened on a nightly basis.

Someone was always losing.

Taylor started switching things up and announced that she’d be repeating some songs during the Asian leg of the tour. She also began to do mashups (more than one song on each instrument), which sent everyone into a frenzy.

When the European leg of the Eras Tour kicked off, she officially took all rules off the table.

That’s right: be scared because every night can be an unhinged story with mashups or full songs. Where we’re going, there are no rules.

Here’s a breakdown of the most recent surprise songs and mashups that Taylor Swift sang at the Eras Tour in 2024. The stories she’s weaving together are certainly something to consider, especially with her addition of The Tortured Poets Department song lists to choose from.

Is The Tortured Poets Department About Matty Healy?

Ah, the age-old Taylor Swift question.

Just who are all her songs about?

She rarely officially confirms or denies who may have inspired any song or lyric, but her fans know her lore.

And many now agree that Matty Healy of The 1975 was more to Taylor than a 4-week fling in 2023. At least, that’s what most of The Tortured Poets seem to be indicating.

Joe Alwyn… who?

Anyway…

It feels like The 1975 lead singer is the muse of this album, and many other songs going back to 2014. That’s right; he’s been swirled into her poems for years.

Since Taylor loves to drop clues and communicate through easter eggs with her fandom, it’s only natural that speculation has run rampant with this album. After all, this is the asylum that she raised us in.

I’ll put together a potential Matty Healy Taylor Swift timeline if there’s interest because it’s pretty wild how he’s been RIGHT. THERE. all along, and very few saw it.

For now, let’s look at the surprise songs and stories she may be telling with these choices and mashups. I’d love to hear your interpretations for each pairing based on the lyrics she’s using.

Does This Mean Taylor Swift And Travis Kelce Are Breaking Up? Is She Emotionally Cheating On Her Current Boyfriend (Again?)

Maybe? Only time will tell, my friends.

But I’ll confess that watching each story unfold on the Eras Tour surprise songs set sometimes feels that way to me. And then sometimes I remember that Taylor’s discography has a lot of love/breakup/emotional content, so it might just be her telling good stories on stage.

Whether that’s her intention or not, it’s something that’s been growing since the Paris songs, with some exceptions.

While the general public sees Taylor and Travis together as Endgame, the complexities of relationships may not equate to happily ever after for these two.

Do I sound crazy? Okay, yes, I know I do.

And trust me when I say, it breaks my heart to think that these two may not go the distance. I want to believe, but… actions are making me think that Taylor’s heart doesn’t align with my own. And, of course, that’s her choice to make.

I’ll say this plainly: her fans don’t get a say in who she dates and I will die on that hill. Our feelings about her romantic life do not matter; go listen to But Daddy I Love Him again if you disagree, Hannah and Sarah. Ahem.

Let the woman LIVE.

But if you listen to what she’s doing, reading the lyrics and how she’s stringing things together, you may also decide to jump aboard this delulu train with me.

So, what is going on, exactly? We may never truly know unless Taylor steps out for an interview and clarifies things with plain language. And honestly, she could be tracking in that direction.

But these songs being shared at this time in her life could mean any number of things.

  • She may be actively wooing the love of her life to come back to her on stage every night. And yikes if true for multiple reasons, mostly that she is still publicly linked to Travis Kelce. Some feel that this album and the current version of Eras Tour is an effort to 1) expose her true feelings in the past for Matty OR 2) let him know that she’s waiting for him on the other side of the door.
  • She may be exercising the demons of a 10-year situationship by singing these songs strung together to tell her story. It may not be anything more than her purging the emotions so she can move on.
  • Taylor might just love telling a good story, and you gotta admit, she’s doing just that with these combinations each night. She knows her fans and knows that they love the lyrics, so it may just be a gift of new stories to ponder and nothing more.
  • Performance Art, anyone? I mean, this isn’t the craziest thing to think about. The easter egging through the surprise songs and mashups may simply be her way of entertaining us, as she mentioned in her Time Person of the Year article. Are you not entertained? I very much am.

It feels like she’s ending one chapter or one era, so to speak, and moving on to the next.

This could be taken as moving on from the Matty Healy of it all (the Travis Kelce-inspired So High School did make it onto the Eras Tour setlist) OR moving on from the hiding of the Matty Healy of it all.

Both are fascinating tracks, to be sure.
